WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Texas A&M University–Texarkana's postseason run came to an end Thursday in a 9-8 extra-inning loss to Cumberlands (Ky.) in the championship round of the Williamsburg Bracket at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
Despite being outhit 12-11 by the Patriots, the Eagles led on three separate occasions. However, defensive miscues and untimely walks proved costly as Cumberlands plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
TAMUT rallied from an early 3-2 deficit, scoring two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to build an 8-6 lead. Junior catcher Raylene Zazueta went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, while third baseman Briana DeLeon added a 2-for-3 effort with three RBIs. Right fielder Grace Cantu scored twice and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
Sophomore shortstop Kaitlyn Cabral reached base three times and scored two runs. Outfielder Dempsie Lindsey added a run-scoring single and a sacrifice bunt in a key pinch-hit appearance.
The Eagles used four pitchers in the loss. Mia Perez got the start but exited early due to injury. Alexis Snyder entered in relief and allowed four earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. Morgan Benge and Charli Miller followed, with Miller taking the loss after surrendering the walk-off run in the ninth.
TAMUT ends its season with a 41-12 overall record and a 24-4 conference mark, capping one of the most successful campaigns in program history.
