
Baseball Splits Doubleheader With USW
Hobbs, NM – The Texas A&M -Texarkana baseball team took one of two games against University of the Southwest on Friday afternoon. The Eagles move to 31-21 overall and 20-12 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs sit a 30-18 and 20-12. The teams will play game 3 today at 1PM CST.
GAME 1 (W,8-6)
A four-run 5th inning helped kickstart the Eagle offense in the come-from-behind 8-6 win in game 1. After a Brandon Riley (FR/Monroe, LA) sac fly and Kyle McMullen (JR/Dixon, CA) double, that brought TAMUT within three, Jack Skinner (SR/Hoquiam, WA) and Eric Spencer (JR/Red Bluff, CA) both scored on an attempted pick off to third base, that the USW catcher sailed down the left field line, for a 4-2 Eagle lead.
The Mustangs answered scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning. TAMUT found life yet again in the 7th. After two consecutive walks, Giancarlo Mijares (JR/Hercules, CA) laced an RBI single to right center. The Eagles tacked on two more on sac fly's by Marzavin Riles (FR/Texarkana, TX ) and Wyatt Stavinoha (SR/Columbus, TX) and would score their fourth and final run in the inning on a Spencer RBI single that would prove to be enough.
Jordan Izzo (SR/Horatio, AR) started on the bump for the winners, tossing four innings and allowing two runs on two hits, however, issuing a season high of six free passes. Michael Passariello picked up the win in relief of Trevor Stone (SR/Fort Worth, TX), while Sean Townsend picked up the save.
GAME 2 (L,12-10)
In game two, the Eagles fell behind quickly after a six run 1st inning by USW. During the 4th, Hunter Reid cut the gap in half with a three-run bomb, his 12th of the season. TAMUT would score another run in the inning on an Austin Majorsky RBI, 6-4 in favor of the Mustangs.
TAMUT took an 8-6 lead in the top of the 6th, as USW quickly responded in their half of the inning cutting the Eagle lead 8-7. The chess match continued in the 7th when Reid tripled, plating a run to regain the lead and Nicholas Tamez helped secure another run with a sac fly scoring Eric Spencer, 10-7.
The Eagles could not hold on in the 8th as USW put up a five spot to seal the 12-10 victory. Nathan Hunter threw four solid innings in relief of starter Collin Fenili. Hunter allowed only two hits and struck out three. Fabian Silva-Pokipola absorbed the loss.
TAMUT cranked out 15 hits and had seven players with multi-hit performances.
