Pitching staff puts clamps on Jarvis Christian during Friday doubleheader sweep

No. 6 A&M-Texarkana put on a pitching clinic Friday during a doubleheader sweep of Jarvis Christian, limiting the visiting Bulldogs to just one unearned run, one walk, and seven hits with 16 strikeouts while winning 2-1 and 8-0 in six innings at Bramlett Field.

 

GAME 1

Anna Westberry (11-1) struck out nine and gave up a single unearned run in the opener for her 11th win of the season. Molly Harrison reached base all three times and had a single, double, and stolen base. Macie Reeves and Cameron Alardin each had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles (28-3 overall, 13-3 RRAC). Sarah Velasquez, Baylee Stautzenberger and Patti Swimley also had hits.

Jarvis Christian (24-18, 8-12) took the lead in the fourth after reaching with a single and advancing on an error in the field. The Bulldogs then moved to third on a passed ball and took a 1-0 lead with an RBI-single.

The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the fourth as Swimley reached via fielder's choice, then scored on Reeves' run-scoring double to tie the game. Reeves scored on the next at-bat when Alardin hit a rope for an RBI-single.

The Bulldogs managed just two baserunners for the remainder of the game, stranding both, while Westberry ended the game with a strikeout.

 

GAME 2

Stephanie Chico (8-1) and Mackenzie Vittitow combined for a two-hit shutout, finishing off Jarvis with an 8-0 win in just six innings. Chico started and went four innings, striking out three while allowing just two hits. Vittitow threw the last two innings without giving up a hit and fanning four.

Slamer had four hits including a triple to go with two RBIs, Stautzenberger drove in two runs and had two hits, while Alyssa Gillen and Macey Cutsinger had triples that scored runs. The Eagles also stole four bases and scored in five of the six innings.

Stautzenberger singled to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the first. Gillen reached on an error that allowed Reeves to score all the way from first, and Cutsinger followed with a two-run triple. Slamer singled home a run to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead after two frames.

Stautzenberger drove home another run in the fourth to make it 6-0, Gillen tripled to score another in the fifth, and Slamer put an end to the game with an RBI single that scored Karissa Jones.

 

NOTEWORTHY

Westberry saw her ERA drop to just 0.80 this season while Chico (1.15) and Vittitow (2.29) each improved on their season mark. As a team, the Eagles' earned run average is just 1.53, the fifth-best team ERA in the nation and best in the RRAC. The team also has an ERA of just 1.22 in conference play.

 

NEXT UP

Tomorrow's previously scheduled games at LSU-Alexandria has been postponed until April 30, so the team will now face Louisiana Christian in Pineville, La with a Tuesday doubleheader slated to begin at 2 pm.
