Eagles Fall to Tigers after Last Second Basket

Eagles Fall to Tigers after Last Second Basket

TEXARKANA, Texas - The Eagles hosted the Tigers of Paul Quinn College this afternoon for a Red River Athletic Conference double header with the men. Women's Basketball would succumb to the Tigers in the final seconds after a turnover led to the Tigers taking a 2-point lead with less than 10 seconds to go. The final score would rule in favor of Paul Quinn 58-56.

At the conclusion of the first quarter, the Eagles would have a single possession lead over the Tigers, 17-15. Quren "Q" Santiago would account for 8 of the Eagles 17 points as she would shoot lights out in the opening quarter, shooting 2-2 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the field. The second quarter would be a low scoring quarter for both teams, the Eagles scoring 11 and the Tigers 12, going into the half TAMUT would be able to hold onto to the lead and have a one-point advantage over Paul Quinn with a score of 28-27.

In the opening minutes of the second half the two teams would exchange baskets continuing to keep the score within a single possession. However, in the final 3 minutes of the third, the Eagles would build themselves a two-possession lead after a free throw by Chioma Treasure Emeh. The Eagles would be up 42-37 going into the final quarter of the game.

The Eagles would hold onto the lead for the majority of the fourth quarter, however with just over a minute left of play, the Tigers would even the score and it would be a battle to the final buzzer. Chioma Treasure Emeh would give the Eagles a lead after a quick steal and fast break with under a minute left to play, but with less than 30 seconds left on the board, the Tigers would be sent to the line for a chance to even the score, and Cierra Taylor would do just that by sinking both free throws. The Eagles looked to earn an edge over the Tigers, but a turnover resulting in a transition basket for the Tigers gave them the edge instead. A last second shot attempt gave TAMUT hope before the clock ran out, but the Tigers would emerge victorious and defeat the Eagles 58-56 at the conclusion of the 40 minutes.

Leading scorers for the Eagles were Quren Santiago with 13 points and Allison Owens with 8. Evelyn Terraza Alcántar would add 4 assists to the mix for TAMUT, and Delfina Misiuna would snag 9 boards to round out the leaders for the Eagles.

Women's Basketball will be back in action against the Steers of Texas College on Tuesday December 3rd at home in the Patterson Student Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
