West Palm Beach, Fla. – Texas A&M University–Texarkana women's soccer showed grit in its season opener against the nation's No. 2 ranked team, but ultimately fell 5-1 to Keiser on Saturday morning.
The Eagles struck first in the 16th minute when Brooklyn Lattier buried her first goal of the season, finishing a setup from Desiree Narvaez to give TAMUT an early 1-0 advantage. Narvaez nearly doubled the lead moments earlier when her shot rang off the crossbar, but Keiser responded with two goals before halftime to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
Sophomore goalkeeper Layla Anaya was tested often and stood tall, recording six saves in the opening 45 minutes, including a pair of diving stops to keep the Eagles within reach. She finished the match with 11 saves against the Seahawks' relentless attack.
The Eagles continued to battle in the second half, but Keiser's offensive depth showed as the Seahawks added three more goals to pull away. Despite the scoreline, TAMUT's defense fought off a storm of 26 total shots by the Seahawks, while Alicia Loera and Paige Haderlie generated looks on the other end.
Women's Soccer is back in action August 30 at 7 p.m. against Nelson, aiming to build on the positives from the opener and use the early test against the nation's No. 2 team as momentum moving forward.
